Taking an oil sample the right way
Engine oil often provides a good indication of whether there is wear on your engine. To prevent problems with your engine and oil, you can use our SOS service. We are happy to provide you with the best advice derived from the SOS analysis. However, this is only possible if the taken oil sample meets the conditions we have set.
10 Rules for Taking a Good Oil Sample
- Work cleanly when taking an oil sample and keep the sample equipment clean and dust-free. If oil or dirt gets on the sample pump, clean it with (washing) gasoline.
- Prevent mix-ups of sample bottles. If you take multiple samples, write with a marker on the bottles which compartment the oil comes from before you begin.
- Always use a clean piece of hose to avoid contamination between different compartments.
- Cut a piece of hose to the correct length. Do this at an angle. Insert the hose into the suction pump so that it sticks out about one centimeter from the black coupling. Secure the hose by tightening the aluminum locking knob on the pump. Keep the hose oil- and dust-free. Then screw the sample bottle into the black coupling on the pump.
- With the engine off, remove the oil dipstick and ensure that the opening of the tube is clean. Insert the sample hose sufficiently deep into the tube and pump the sample bottle three-quarters full of oil. Unscrew the bottle from the suction pump and place the cap on the bottle firmly, ensuring it closes well.
- Before removing the used hose from the pump, clean the part of the hose that was inside the pump with a clean cloth to ensure the pump remains clean.
- Now, complete the sample form. Tip: You can also do this (in advance) online and then print the labels. The system will pre-fill most of the information for you.
- Place one filled sample bottle with the corresponding sample label in one of the supplied leak-proof plastic shipping bags. Seal the bag carefully at the blue edge by removing the adhesive strip. (For additional instructions, see the back of the bag.)
- To get the analysis results as quickly as possible, it is important that the sample reaches our laboratory quickly. Drop the bag with the sample in the nearest mailbox. No stamp is required within the Netherlands. For shipments from outside the Netherlands, you will need to ensure the bag is sufficiently stamped.
- The standard SOS sampling interval for engines is every 250 operating hours unless otherwise advised by us. Additionally, we recommend taking a sample just before and just after changing the oil.
Instructions for Filling in the Oil Sample
The SOS oil analysis offers several important benefits. By constantly monitoring the condition of your engine and oil, you can prevent damage and unnecessary downtime. Additionally, good engine and oil condition ensures optimal fuel consumption, maximum efficiency, and a longer lifespan.
