Ultra-low emissions with the ULEV notation
Cleaner than the standard
In the world of shipping, strict standards are in place to reduce the impact on the environment. International organizations like the International Maritime Organization (IMO), as well as regional bodies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), implement regulations such as the Tier standards and Stage V norms to regulate ship engine emissions. The ULEV designation goes even further, and so does Pon Power.
Ultra-low emissions vessel
It will be a remarkable development for the outsider: a voluntary certification like the ULEV notation. Fully written out, this certification stands for Ultra-Low Emissions Vessel, issued by Bureau Veritas; an internationally recognized classification society. The ULEV notation is awarded to vessels that use engines that are cleaner than the international standards require. Through the use of advanced after-treatment systems, the emission of harmful substances is reduced to an ultra-low level, resulting in these vessels having a significantly lower environmental impact.
A step further: why?
In the maritime sector, various emission standards are in place, such as the Stage V and IMO III regulations. The ULEV notation stands apart because it is voluntary and, moreover, cleaner than all other regulations require. This raises the question: why would a ship owner want a ULEV notation?
Tom van der Giesen is Account Manager Prime at Pon Power and can answer that question: "With a ULEV notation, ship owners can distinguish their fleet. ULEV vessels are cleaner in terms of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter, significantly reducing air pollution. When entering a tender, you can truly show concern for the environment, residents, and nature with these ships."
"Another reason," says Tom, "is that ULEV vessels are incredibly future-proof. Legislation regarding performance and emissions will only become stricter in the coming years, and by bringing ships to this clean level now, they are expected to already be partially prepared for future regulations."
