First Cat EU Stage V engines successfully commissioned
At the end of January 2022, the first six Cat EU Stage V certified marine engines were successfully commissioned. At the Dolderman shipyard in Dordrecht, the newly built tankers Moorea, Messina, and Cito were equipped with a fully factory-certified EU Stage V system. This is a milestone for both Caterpillar, Pon Power, and Dolderman.
COMMITMENT TO INLAND SHIPPING
Ben Timmerman, in 2022 Account Manager for Inland Shipping and now a Brand Ambassador at Pon Power, was thrilled about the commissioning. He said: "This marks the festive conclusion of a very intensive period, during which Pon Power and Caterpillar have demonstrated our commitment to inland shipping. It was a challenging journey, partly due to COVID-19 and partly due to material shortages in the supply chain. As a result, this delivery experienced delays, but thanks to the intensive cooperation with Dolderman, Vario Scheepvaart B.V., and Universe Shipping B.V., we have succeeded. We thank Vario Scheepvaart B.V. and Universe Shipping B.V. for their trust in us and wish their ships safe voyages."

integrated system
The six engines were the first engines commissioned where Caterpillar provides the entire integrated product, including both the diesel engine and the after-treatment system. The complete EU Stage V system consists of the Cat engine, a diesel particulate filter (DPF), and a Selective Catalytic Reduction system (SCR).
A central computer on the engine controls the entire system, ensuring the most efficient combustion and the cleanest possible engine operation across the entire usage profile. Since all components are from Caterpillar, the entire system is factory-certified for EU Stage V.
image boost
Despite the challenging start, Pon Power saw mainly benefits from the EU Stage V legislation. Ben Timmerman explained: "Ultimately, EU Stage V is a blessing for inland shipping because the emissions from these engines are now comparable to the environmental emissions from road traffic. In terms of climate emissions, inland shipping scores up to nine times better than road traffic. This represents a huge image boost for inland shipping in the supply chain, and I expect that we, as an entire industry, will reap the benefits."
